"We went to Cheaha State Park, which Jillian had heard was the highest point in Alabama, and very beautiful. It was a perfect November afternoon, with a gentle sun coating light over everything like golden syrup. Jilly and I climbed out to the edge of a rocky cliff with our picnic, surely far beyond the government-endorsed safety boundary—and definitely, the common-sense boundary. It was worth it for the spectacular view, though. We were hidden from all the tourists on the platform near us. We'd sneaked in a bottle of champagne, and she'd packed some kind of fancy chicken salad sandwiches and chocolate cupcakes. And we sat there, together, the only two people in the world. “Look,” my wife said of the landscape, “It’s a jeweler’s exposition of miniature round sapphire lakes and emerald-cut topaz fields, with red and orange maples and oaks in attendance.” When she told me that, I knew she’d describe it to her class exactly that way on Monday. I was married to the world’s most beautiful poet."

That's an excerpt from Delaney's People. I thought of it the afternoon before last, when I saw the way the light was hitting the scenery around here. There's only a tiny blog today, but I want you to see these:
It's so darned pretty in Delta right now. We had a bad storm last night, but today is cool and sunny. I hope it is where you are, too.
Love from Delta.
I'm lovin' those Delta dirt roads too...

ReplyDeleteI loved the red–dirt-road. It reminds me of my younger days. Picture me on my 16 hand grey gelding, Tarah, going down that road. One time he decided to lay down and roll in it with his saddle on. It took me weeks to get him grey again, and I never got ALL the red dirt out of the saddle.
